The Trouble with Polycystic Ovaries
The Most Common Causes of Polycystic Ovaries
Women, single or married, always look forward to having a child in the near future. PCOS or polycystic ovaries syndrome may result in sterility or a delay in pregnancy for women. Untreated polycystic ovaries make monthly periods hard to predict. Amenorrhea or the absence of the monthly period in women is also one of its effects. It can also be the cause of acne, and if left untreated, this can further progress to diabetes and blood pressure concerns. Nowadays, there are a lot of proven treatments for women especially if they are planning on conceiving a baby.
More information about polycystic ovaries
The word polycystic can be misleading, it doesn’t necessarily mean the presence of numerous cysts because sometimes no cyst really exists. PCOS happens when there is an imbalance in the hormones inside the body. These hormones are needed by the body to process several functions and these include the ability to conceive a baby.
Hormones involved in PCOS
- Insulin– This is the hormone that affects the blood sugar level. In PCOS, the body doesn’t respond to insulin hormone the way it should. Diabetes is often related to PCOS.
- Androgens– This is the ”male” hormone but women have it too. Androgens are at an increased level for people having PCOS. This is the reason for symptoms such as hair loss, abnormal hair growth in unusual places, amenorrhea, and not getting pregnant.
- Progesterone– The decrease in this hormone also cause amenorrhea and difficulty in getting pregnant.
